Why Teachers Need to Discuss Current Events

Over the last few months there have been many appalling events in the news. My family, friends and I would usually discuss these events together, expressing our disbelief. The next day, I go to school hoping to have a discussion or gain more knowledge about these current events, but instead no one would talk about it the whole day.

I think events such as mass shootings, natural disasters, political situations  or any other major news stories needs to be brought up in school. Students like myself are curious about our world, what happens here and elsewhere, and how it affects us. When teachers teach about current events it can influence a student’s world and how the it works.

Without clarifying facts or mentioning things that many students may not even know have happened. This causes fictional stories, and misuse of information. I would rather know about the trauma and knowledge about my world from it then be sheltered by it.

Discussing current events don’t have to talk the whole period, nor does it have to be talked about by all of my six teachers. It could be talked about by all history teachers or all math teachers.

In order for students to become responsible citizens, one has to know how the world functions. Because of the state of our world, it is even more urgent that students talk about current events. Addressing something that students are passionate about helps students gain insight in order for them to make real-world connections with others. School may be their only source or outlet to discuss or gain awareness about what it happening in our day to day life.

I have considered the fact that some current events could be hard for teachers to talk about if it makes them emotional or if they have a strong opinion towards it, but I still feel that it is valuable to talk about because it can help students navigate what they value and make you see what other people value.

News spreads fast on social media, but whether it’s accurate or not is another reason why it is important for teachers to discuss it. For some, the teachers we spend most of our day learning from are our only source for news about the world.
