Movies to watch over winter break


Although winter break is great and all, if you ever have a day where you don’t know what to do, these are some movies that are worth checking out.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Release date: December 15th

Starring: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac

About the movie: Continuing from the end of episode 7, the main character Rey, takes her first steps to becoming a Jedi, being trained by Luke Skywalker. She embarks on an adventure with the other characters to unlock the mysteries of the Force and discover secrets of the past.

Why you should watch: Its Star Wars! One of the most popular movie franchises worldwide, Star Wars films capture audiences and make them feel like they’re apart of that universe because you can’t go wrong with an action packed movie and an amazing story line,


Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Release Date: December 20th

Starring: Bobby Cannavale, Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Nick Jonas

About this movie: Four high school kids discover an old video game console and get sucked into the game. They then discover they don’t just play the game, they have to survive the game. If they don’t beat the game, they will be stuck in the game forever.

Why you should watch: A remake of the popular film which was released in 1995. With a star studded cast, it is bound to be a great movie for all ages. The movie will also include a tribute to late star Robin Williams, which will be a good nod to the first film


Insidious: The Last Key

Release date: January 5

Staring: Lin Shaye, Hannah Hayes, Angus Sampson

About the movie: The fourth installment in the Insidious series, shows how a Parapsychologist who deals with evil spirits takes on another case where a man is claiming his home is haunted. She then makes the horrific discovery that the home she is investigating is her old family home she grew up in as a child

Why you should watch: The Insidious series is known for its jump scares, and having its audiences on the edge of their seats. The previous movies have had good plots and I don’t expect this one to be any different. If you’re looking to jump out of your seat, go out and watch this movie



Release date: December 22


Starring: Matt Damon, Hong Chau, Jason Sudeikis, Christoph Waltz, and Kristen Wiig

About the movie: When scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall as a solution to overpopulation, Paul and his wife Audrey decide to abandon their stressed lives in order to get small and move to a new downsized community

Why you should watch: Matt Damon movies are usually entertaining and this doesn’t look to be be any different. The other appeal of this movie is questions surrounding the plot and what direction the story will go.


The Disaster Artist

Release date: December 8

Starring: James Franco, Dave Franco, Alison Brie, Josh Hutcherson, Seth Rogen, Ari Graynor, and Jacki Weaver.

About the movie: A parody of how the movie, “The Room”(released in 2003), one of the biggest movie flops in history, was made. The story follows two hopeful actors who get their own movie made, and while it turns out to be critically maligned, it also becomes a cult classic

Why you should watch: Whether or not audiences have previously seen “The Room,” there’s satisfaction simply in witnessing great actors like James and Dave Franco, who are just down right funny. The movie has also received a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes on it’s opening day.


The Greatest Showman

Release date: December 25

Starring: Zendaya, Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, and Rebecca Ferguson.

About the movie: The Greatest Showman is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business & tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation

Why you should watch: The movie looks heartfelt and emotional, add in singing and dancing and you’ll probably leave the theatre feeling joyful.
