After a strong regular season, Galileo’s wrestling team is looking to take home the upcoming All-City championship on February 17th at SOTA. The team will look to avenge their regular season defeat, and dethrone their rival and reigning champions, Lowell High School.
The Lions put together a 6-2 record during the season, with their only losses coming to Lowell and Lincoln. Although the Lions lost 2 matches, their main focus is on beating Lowell. Senior Tug. M. stated, “We knew Lowell was gonna be tough, so losing to them was not surprising. But losing to Lincoln was more of a fluke loss, mostly because I didn’t make weight.” Senior Brandon Tu added, “I expected a smoother season, there were a lot of ups and downs, but we ended up doing well anyway.”
The team is under guidance of head coach Ronald Griffin and new assistant coaches Jimmy Zhen, Kyle Paisansiri, Cindy Kuang, and Chad Rosenau, all of whom were former Galileo wrestlers and have used their experience on the mat to aid this year’s team. The team is led by 2 stand out wrestlers, Senior Brandon Tu, who is a returning All City champ, and sophomore Peter Colias. The Lions will lean on the talent of these 2 wrestlers to help them bring home the title.
The team is looking forward to the opportunity to win All-City this Saturday, and fulfill the goals the team had set for themselves from the beginning of the season, Coach Jimmy stated, “We really want to reach all city championship as a team and eventually qualify as many individual champions to the CIF state tournament as possible.”
As for the wrestlers, they know that it will take a team effort to meet their expectations. “I expect everyone on Saturday to bring their A game. We just have to take it one match at a time and score as many points as possible.” Tug M. stated, “I’m excited for Saturday and we just really have to focus on beating Lowell. We’re well prepared but the lightweights definitely have to win.”
