The Galileo Lions won 2 of their last 3 games to reach the playoffs as the 5th seed. The Lions finished the season with a 5-9 record, losing to Lowell (58-44), but bouncing back against Balboa (53-64) and Academy (69-50) to finish the regular season.
The Lions were looking for pay back against on February 13, after heartbreaking loss against them January 22nd, earlier in the regular season. However the Lions could not get revenge as their defense let them down, leaving Cardinal players wide open to knock down 3-point shots. Additionally, the Lions offense was stagnant and their 15 turnovers sealed the loss. Luke Yoda said, “Yes i felt like everyone was trying and we played as hard as we can, but we just were down a couple points.”
The Lions faced off against the Balboa Buccaneers on February 16th, which was also senior night for the Lions. Emotions were running high not only because of senior night, but the Lions needed a win in order to secure a playoff spot. The Lions leaned on senior center Ben Pate to supply the offense (19 points) and found a way to limit their turnovers in order to come away with a victory. “Winning this game was very important to me,” said Ben, adding. “I’ve had a lot of memories in this gym and I had to make sure I ended the game right,”
In order to secure their playoff spot, the Lions needed a win against the Academy Wolves on February 20th. In the first half, the Lions though came out with very little energy. They couldn’t score on their fast-break opportunities and kept letting the Wolves get inside for offensive rebounds. But the Lions looked like a different team in the second half. They stepped up their defense to make stops, and scored both inside and outside to put the game out of reach. Junior guard, Jason Lei said, “I’m really happy that we blew them out to secure the playoff spot so we can show what we are here for, which is a ring.”
