Fortnite, a popular, multi-platform game just hit mobile phones on March 15 and is taking students by surprise. The game has always had a lot of popularity surrounding it, but it was never accessible by phone. Students were restricted to playing on console and computers at home, but now they can play on the go. Fortnite was first introduced in July 25, 2017 and has since amassed a daily 3.4 million players across all platforms, according to pcgamesn.
The game is a co-op sandbox game designed to pit all players against each other in order to survive. Players are thrown into a map and forced to collect weapons and fight each other to the death. What forces everyone to fight is the ever shrinking map which slowly brings all players closer together and forces them to engage each other.
Fortnite’s popularity can be attributed to its in game concept, players are thrown into a match with 100 players and the last one surviving wins. This -only one player wins concept- evokes a lot of competitiveness in people, making them play more, as Senior, Anthony M. states, “I really love how competitive it is, and that competitiveness makes me want to play more and more to be the best.” This urge to be the best makes fortnite one of the most played games at the moment and its popularity has only grown due to its new introduction on the phone.
