In the weeks leading up to Avengers: Infinity War, it seems all that anyone could speculate about was who was going to die. Instead of worrying about whether Thanos can get his hands on all the Infinity Stones, most fans were preparing tissues and for their hearts to possibly be broken by the deaths of their favorite Avengers.
The first major character to kick the bucket was Loki. The very first scene carries over from the last scene of Thor: Ragnarok, which shows Thor’s ship (carrying the remaining population of Asgard) confronted by Thanos’ even larger ship. In an attempt to kill Thanos, Loki is then choked to death by the superior Titan. This death is then followed by the death of Heimdall, Thor’s closest friend.
The next person to make her exit is Gamora from the Guardians of the Galaxy. In order to obtain the Soul Stone, Thanos had to sacrifice one thing that he loves. For most fans, including Gamora herself, many believed this wasn’t a simple task for Thanos because he is determined to achieve his goal of balancing the universe and giving no consideration to any distractions. However, it is discovered that Thanos does love one thing: her daughter Gamora. He then proceeds to throw her off a cliff as a sacrifice, which grants him the Soul Stone.
With four Infinity stones already in his possession, Thanos then proceeds to extract the last one (the Mind stone) from Vision. This is where things turn badly for Vision. In an attempt to prevent Thanos from acquiring all the stones, Vision proposed that Scarlet Witch destroy the stone before Thanos could get it. In a truly heartfelt scene, Scarlet Witch is forced to kill her beloved Vision by destroying the Mind stone with her powers. Unfortunately, Thanos uses the Time stone to rewind back to the moment before Vision died and then proceeds to kill him again by yanking out the Mind stone from his head.
With all the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet fully operational, Thanos is able to snap his fingers, which presumably kills off half the population on Earth in the form of turning into dust.
Among the top contenders many Marvel fans believed who would die in Avengers: Infinity War were Captain America (played by Chris Evans) and Tony Stark/Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr.). The main reason was surprisingly not plot-based, but rather contract-based. Coming into this movie, both Chris Evans’ and Robert Downey Jr’s contracts with Marvel Studios were expiring. In other words, they were a pretty safe bet. With that said, they didn’t die.
Major characters to literally “bite the dust” included Black Panther, the Guardians of the Galaxy except for Rocket, Winter Soldier, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Spider-Man, and Dr. Strange.
It’s worth mentioning that among the Avengers that are still alive, most of them are from the original cast of the Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, and Bruce Banner.
