In the most anticipated AAA football match up of the season, undefeated teams Galileo and Lincoln went head to head on Saturday October 20th. Unfortunately, for the Lions they were unable to stop the ground attack of the Mustangs losing 52-18 as Lincoln’s running back, Deshaun Crawford, ran for a total of five touchdowns on the Lions defense.
Due to a number of injuries, a lack of depth to the defensive line hurt the Lions, and was part of the reason they were unable to stop Lincoln’s running back. “The linemen had no breaks, but they hung in there and fought through the fatigue,” says senior receiver Leo D. But senior linebacker Jimmie E. added,“They were bigger and more physical than us.”
The Lions not only had to contend with the running game of the Mustangs, but also with the loss of quarterback Ronald F., who suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter. Junior Matthew T. stepped up in Ronald’s place and will be counted on for next week’s game as well. “Matt did well when he came in and we’re confident he’ll do well in the next game too,” says coach Mark Huynh.
The Lions are hopeful this won’t be the last time they see the Mustangs, as they potentially will play them again in the championship game, with a healthier team.
“If we play them again we we’re going to have a healthier team and we’ll have a better chance of beating them,” says senior linebacker Jimmie E. However, coach Mark cautioned, “If we play them again we have to get off our blocks and tackle.”
