The Galileo boys varsity basketball team participated in the annual Blue & Gold basketball tournament at Jefferson High School in Daly City from 11/29-12/1. Their record in the tournament was 1-2 as they beat Jefferson in the first round, but lost the next 2 games to Independence High school (San Jose) and University High School.
Galileo avenged the last 4 years of defeat to Jefferson with a comfortable win against the host team. Although Jefferson led 6-0 in the first few minutes of the game, the Lions picked up their play and turned the game around, leading by 10 points at the end of the first half and extending their lead to 19 points in the opening minutes of the 4th quarter. Galileo won 55-49
Although only down 10-9 at the end of first quarter of game 2, the Lions lost starting shooting guard Ryan Huang to a rolled ankle, and could never overcome the inside-outside game of Independence HS (San Jose). Although the Lions kept it close, the 76ers pulled away to end the game, winning 56-42.
While the Lions put together 2 good games to start the tournament, the Lions had no answer for University High School as the Red Devils led 18-2 after the first quarter. The Lions could not mount any kind of comeback and looked sluggish throughout the game, eventually falling 65-40. “The lack of energy in the locker room seemed to carry on to the court,” said co-captain Kevin Sheehan.
