Lady Lions Start Season Off At Convent Tournament

The Galileo Lions Girls Varsity Basketball team competed hard in the Convent Tournament which took place at Stuart Hall from 12/6 – 12/8 but came out of the tournament with a 1-2 record.

Game 1

The Lady Lions lost played their first game of the season game and of the tournament against Bentley High (Oakland). The game was close throughout as the two teams were tied  14-14 at halftime. However, in the 4th quarter, the Phoenix was able to pull away from the Lions, securing the lead and the game. The final score was 39-33.

Game 2

In Game 2, the Lady Lions looked to build off a strong first game against the Branson Bulls. The Lions trailed at halftime, 18-12, but mounted a comeback in the 2nd half. In the final minutes of the 4th quarter as the Lions shutdown Branson’s offense and found their rhythm offensively, behind star player, junior Sabrina Melendez, who leads the team with a game-high 20 points. The Lions beat Branson, 45-37.

Game 3

While the Lions played 2 tough games to start the tournament, the last game of the tournament was very one-sided, and not for the Lions. Playing against SF Mercy Skippers, the Lions came into the game with the wrong attitude. Sabrina said, “ A lot of the girls gave up before the game started. We doubted our own skills. We thought they’d be a good team so we kind of gave up.” Unfortunately,  to make matters worse, Sabrina also injured her knee in the 3rd quarter, the same knee she injured at the tournament last year. The Lions fell to the skippers 54-14.
