For the last 15 years, JCYC (Japanese Community Youth Council) has been a part of Galileo, offering resources for students interested in applying or attending a college or university. They are at Galileo to provide support for the counseling department and to assist students.
Every Monday through Thursday in room 209, Kristen Tatum is available to Galileo students who are looking for advice information or someone to walk them through the college application process. This is Kristen’s first year at Galileo, having spent time previously at Roosevelt Middle School. The chance to come to Galileo opened up for Kristen after Vicki Kong, who was at Galileo with JCYC the previous 4 years, decided to attend grad school.
Kristen has enjoyed her transition from middle school to high school. She says, “It [The transition] has been great. I’ve enjoyed working with a different age group and getting to help students apply to college. The best part of job: seeing how many people get into the college they wanted.”
Through JCYC, Kristen offers tutoring, presentations, and field trips to college campuses to help students learn about and prepare for college. Kristen also works closely with college counselor, Ms. Chan to help inform seniors about all of the resources available at school.
Kristen’s advice to seniors would be, “think about what they are looking for in a college, research colleges that they are interested in, ask Galileo staff questions, and start the process early.”
