SFUSD students received a rare Tuesday off of school on February 5th to celebrate the Lunar New Year, the year of the pig. The Lunar New Year is celebrated not only by a large number of Galileo students, but also staff at the school. On Monday, a number of staff dressed in traditional Chinese attire to celebrate the event.
Teachers had different reasons for dressing up to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Administrative assistant Ms. Grinnell, said, “Even though I am white I have a lot of Chinese friends and I want to be part of their celebration and today I am wearing a blue Jacket from the Tang Dynasty and the jade pendant for good luck and health.
Other teachers wanted the school to know how they feel about their heritage. Paraprofessional teacher, Ms. Lee, said, “We are proud of our heritage and I want to celebrate our Chinese tradition.” English teacher Ms. Ma, added, “It’s important for me to celebrate because it’s part of my tradition and my identity. It also keeps me close to my family.”
