Winning back-to-back titles and the fifth in seven years, the Galileo wrestling team took home the All-City title over Lowell by the slim margin of 7 points (183-176) on February 9th at Washington High School. A whooping 13 Galileo Wrestlers placed top 4 in their respective divisions.
Despite coming in second place to Lowell during the regular season, the Lions came prepared for All City. Junior Ivan Z. (106 lbs) set the tone with his first ever pin.
Galileo continued to rack up points throughout the first round, but during the second round Lowell made their move, taking the lead with just a few matches to go. But Galileo heavyweights senior Marino B. (182 lbs) and senior Leonardo D. (195 lbs) both won their matches, helping Galileo earn the points to give them the win over Lowell.
“Winning all city again was a really big goal for the team, because it laid the foundation of something we can build on, which is possibly a legacy. I hope that our team can keep working hard and leaving everything out on the mat, so we can maybe have another year of being champions and maybe hope for four more,” said junior Peter C. (160 lbs)
Unlike last year, Galileo will be sending not one, but three wrestlers to state: Peter C. (160 lbs), Marino B. (182 lbs) and Leonardo D. (195 lbs). The wrestlers will travel to Bakersfield to compete in the state tournament next Wednesday, February 20th.
