Flag Starts Title Defense Strong

By: Leo D.

The Galileo Lionesses flag football started off the season with narrow 8-6 victory against the Lincoln Mustangs on Friday, March 1st. Showing off their championship caliber defense from last year, the Lionesses began their journey to defend the title with their victory over the Mustangs. With the win, the Lions are now first (1-0) in the AAA.

The Lioness jumped to an early lead against the Mustangs when junior receiver Malena Mitchell scored the first touchdown of the season early in the game. Unfortunately, the Lionesses failed to complete their extra point, giving them a 6 point lead. That seemed like it would be more than enough though as the Lions vaunted defense held the Mustangs scoreless in the first half.

Malena M. on scoring “It was so dope to be the first one, and I want to score many more times this season!”

However in the 2nd half, the Mustangs came back with a touchdown of their own, but they too failed to complete their extra point, leaving the score tied.

The game was at a offensive stalemate with both offenses getting nowhere near scoring until the very last minutes of the 4th quarter. That was when Lionesses’ defensive superstar, senior linebacker Sierra Walker, forced a safety, giving the Lionesses the lead and the win.

Sierra W. on closing out the game, “I was locked in the whole game and that safety that I got was just reflection of the work and effort I put into flag.”

The Lionesses look to dominate the Wallenberg Bulldogs on Wednesday, March 6th.
