Lion’s Volleyball Looking For Momentum

The Galileo Boy’s Volleyball team got a much needed win against the Academy Wolves on April 17th, winning 3 games to 0 (25-6, 25-7, 25-10). Even with the victory the Lions have some work to do if they want to make the playoffs. The win against the Wolves highlighted the Lion’s potential, when they are playing their best. The team has now evened their record at 3-3, which is a positive considering the young team has had to deal with a number of players being unable to play due to injury or grades.

Before the game against Academy, the Lions played the previous 2 games with only 8 players. Both games ended up in losses partly because of the difficulties of only having 2 substitutes

Both games were against two of the top three teams in the league, Burton, and Lincoln.

“Playing those two games with so few players was really hard because after three sets we start getting tired and having more players could have gave some of the players on the court rest, but it allowed us to find one of many weaknesses we have as a team,” said senior Vincent L.

Although they were shorthanded, when the Lions played at Burton on April 10, 2019 they started out strong, dominating the Pumas by winning two straight sets (25-18, 25-13). However, fatigue set in and the Lions ended up losing 2 sets in a row (22-25, 23-25), before losing in the deciding set, 14-16.

Despite the loss, the players felt like they gained some valuable experience. Sophomore Jason Wu says, “The energy in the gym was electrifying, and the game gave us a feel of what the playoff environment will feel like and what we have to do to be able to close out games.”

Two days later though, It seemed like the tough loss against Burton carried over to the match against Lincoln, who is currently in 3rd place, on April 12. The Lions lost the match 3 sets to 1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 25-13)

The Lions will most likely have to win their remaining 3 games to make the playoffs, which will be a challenge as there are a few  good teams that stand in their way. Coach Mark says with high hopes, “We have a good chance to make the playoffs based on the standings as long as we win out the rest of the games.”
