The Pros & Cons of Working

By Afran Ali, Staff Writer

I got my first job on October 26 at Hooptopia in the chase center, where families can come in and feel like a basketball champion, similar to the Warriors, for a day. Working so far has been a good experience on how the real world is going to be like when Im working in the future. I try to fit everything in my schedule and have time to do other things on top of night school on tuesdays and thursdays,I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to handle everything, but surprisingly I’ve been able to handle it pretty well.

I also tell myself that if my grades drop i’ll quit my job and just focus on school, but since I like my job I’ve pushed myself to do homework everyday even if I’m tired. Getting paid also motivates me to do better because all my hard work pays off when i get paid. With my checks now I deposit most of it, but cash some of it for food or other spending items and with what I save, I just leave it in the bank.

Part of the reason I enjoy working is all the employees and staff are so funny and kind which makes work fun and makes me look forward to going everyday. When I first started working there it only took about 2 weeks to feel comfortable with them because they are all very chill and welcoming.

My initial reason for wanting to work was because I started feeling bad for always asking my parents for money and having them buy me expensive things, I thought it was a good time to get a job right now because my grades are good and i just wanted to keep busy instead of having nothing to do everyday,

I’ve actually been wanting to work for quite awhile before I got the job, but my parents were against it. They would always tell me to just focus on school, and a job would get in between me and school. I finally convinced my parents to allow me to get a job by showing them I was responsible enough and telling them if they notice my grades drop i would stop working.

As for finding a job, my friend told me about Hooptopia and it’s located right by our house, so we figured it would be perfect for us. After my first paycheck came I went shopping and bought some new clothes. I would say I was too excited so I spent it all right away, but for future references don’t do that unless it’s your first paycheck.

When my friend and I applied we had to link our resume with it and then the manager called us saying to come in for an interview, we were so nervous because it was going to be our first interview. In the end we were really just overthinking it all because it went so smooth, the manager was so chill and as soon as she saw us she liked us right away, and she joked  around with us so we immediately felt good about the job.

Overall I’m really enjoying my first job. I work Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I have time to do my homework when I get off work, which is at like 9pm and on Tuesdays I do my homework after night school at 7:45pm.

Luckily I’ve been able to balance everything as time has gone on and I’ve gotten used to my schedule. My big takeaway about having the job is that while I really enjoy the people and the job itself, it’s much harder to balance the time I have time to spend on homework, and I’ve spent a lot less time with my family, but at the end of the day it’s worth it getting all that money.
