The girls’ varsity basketball team had a memorable celebration for senior night on January 30th, playing a thrilling triple overtime game against the Wallenberg Bulldogs that ultimately ended in a heart wrenching loss, 53-44. Despite the loss, the night was special for the 4 seniors as they celebrated their last home game with teammates, family, and friends
“I love senior night seeing the family come together, seeing the friends come together, seeing players react on what that gym means to them, I’m honored to be a part of it,” said head coach, Mr. Matt Allen.
As for the game, it was tightly contested throughout, with Wallenberg heading into the 4th quarter with a lead. But the Lionness’ tightened up on defense as they held the Bulldogs to only 2 points the entire quarter. Then in a big moment, with less than 5 seconds left in the game, junior Susan Li hit a game tying 3 to send the game into overtime.
In the first and second overtimes, both teams had many chances to win the game. For the Lionness’, Junior Chloe Saephan had her best career game, scoring a career high 17 points including all 5 points in overtime. In the 3rd overtime though, the Lionness’ could not keep up with Bulldogs as they outscored the, 9-0. With the loss, the team’s record now stands at 3-4.
A disappointed but still optimistic Coach Allen said, “As a coach the part that stands out are the missed opportunities, but we are grateful for the opportunity to play crunch time minutes which will serve us well in the future. It’s a beautiful thing to be a part of a team and experience moments where you rise to the occasion for the person next to you.”
