JV Girls Season Ends Playoff Drought

By Susan Wu

The JV Girls basketball team ended a great season with a playoff loss against the Lowell Cardinals (62-25) on February 19. After coming in 6th place last year, with only 1 win, this year’s team placed 4th, earning their first playoff appearance in 5 years. Galileo was tied with the ICA Spartans with 4 wins and 8 losses, but Galileo was able to earn the final playoffs spot because of their 2 wins over ICA.

The team is proud of the progress they made this year, and what they have achieved in reaching their goal of making the playoffs. The girls knew playing at Lowell was going to be tough–yesterday was their third match-up with them this season.

The game got off to a rough start for the Lioness, as the team rushed their decision making, which led to a lot of turnovers and easy baskets for the Cardinals.

However, the team responded well in the second half and outscored Lowell in the 3rd quarter. Key plays by sophomore Nicole Melendez and freshman Cali Lipscomb gave the team energy to keep playing hard.

The team’s best possession also came in the 3rd quarter when Sophomore Anna Lei scored off the team’s high low offense. This was followed by a three pointer from Lipscomb which got the team excited.

Freshman Kaylee Ong said, “We all fought hard with pride, even if we lost. We are proud that we made the playoffs.” Varsity coach, Matt Allen is super proud of the group and is focused on helping a lot of the girls take a big step next season when many of them will move up to Varsity.
