Girls Soccer Fall Short in Playoffs

By Staff Writer, Susan Wu

For the 2nd year in a row, the Galileo girls soccer team came 2nd(6 Wins, 2 Losses, 2 Ties) in Division 2, grabbing the last spot in the playoffs. This set up a match between the Lions and the George Washington Eagles in the first round of playoffs on February 26, but unfortunately for the Lions, the season ended in heartbreak, losing 2-1.

Despite the loss, according to Galileo head coach, Ms. Scott, the girls played awesome as Washington was by far the best team they had played against.

The Lions had the Eagles on their heels at the beginning of the match as the Lions scored first, in the first half, when Junior Grace Foster- McDebery scored the only goal for the Lions with the assist from Senior Yovanna Sanchez. Yovana sent a beautiful pass right between Washington defenders to Grace, who Grace took the ball on a  fast break, chased it down, and made a quick shot right into the corner of the goal.

However the lead was short lived as Washington came back and scored 2 goals of their own in the first half. The second half was a defensive match as both teams could not score a goal, leaving the Lions short of advancing in the playoffs.

Despite the loss, Coach Scott is optimistic about the future of the team. She said, “ The majority of our team are sophomores, so we are a young team that has 2 more years of playing together. Also the girls have improved so much since the beginning of the season to the end, so I know that next year’s season is going to be even better building upon that. Overall it was a great season.”
