Lions win 2 of 3 at Miramonte

Freshman Andres V. #11 shoots a free throw

The Lions JV/Varsity took home 2 out of 3 games against the Miramonte Matadors in a triple-header on Saturday, November 30th. The Freshmen and JV team both won their games (49-39, 50-42) but the varsity came up short in a close game, 47-50.

“We were competitve, showed growth, but there were things we need to work on that continues to hurt us in the game. In the end, an inconsistent week of practice attendance showed our rust,” says Coach Mark.

Even though Galileo only has 2 teams, the coaches made 3 teams by separting only the freshmen to play in the first game, and then a mix of varsity and JV to play on the JV team, which left the varsity team down a couple of players.

In the freshmen game, the young Lions outscored the Matadors in every quarter while holding them under 10 points each quarter. The Lions were led by guard Andres V., who scored 14 points, and forwards Jerome S. (13 points) and Addison W. (11 points).

The Lions got off to a hot start in the JV game by scoring 32 points in the 1st half (18 in the 2nd quarter) to build a 14-point halftime lead. They were able to hold on to the lead in the 2nd half, winning by 8, 50-42. JV was led by sophomore forward Jordan D. (19 points) and sophomore guard Jackie Y. (11 points).

Jordan D. says, “We played well as a team and had a lot of steals. The main thing that helped us win the game was the lead we had all game and defensive stops plus steals. Overall, it was a good game from the start.”

The varsity team lost a heartbreaker after leading at halftime, 30-24, but couldn’t keep the lead, after having trouble scoring against the Matadors zone. The varsity squad was led by sophomore guard Nathan L. (16 points) and sophomore forward Kody F. (10 points).

“This is the first game this season that I can say that I am proud of the way we played on defense. We defineity need to improve our offense specifically close game scenarios and situational drills in practice that could help with that,” says senior forward Mahlon C.
