Celestial Dragons Make Triumphant Return at Lake Merced Youth Race

In the windy weather of Lake Merced, the CDBA (California Dragon Boat Association) hosted their annual Youth Race on April 27th, returning in full force, marking the start of the dragon boat racing season for high school teams across the Bay Area. Amid the fierce competition at the race, Galileo Academy’s Celestial Dragons had one of their strongest performances yet, placing 3rd in the Mixed and Guys A Division Finals, and their highly anticipated return to the A Division after a 2-year absence.

The field this year was full of powerhouse teams like Lowell, Lincoln, Washington, CYC, and the Rough Riders. But it was Galileo who turned heads with their energetic and unmatched team spirit. Through 6 heats of seedings, semi-finals, finals, and gender races, Galileo hung tough with determination and teamwork.

One of the most jaw-dropping moments of the day came when Galileo topped out Lowell by over half a second—a feat that many on the team had never imagined possible. “Beating Lowell was crazy,” said junior Kyson D “They’ve always been one of the top teams, so crossing the finish line ahead of them was like a dream come true.”

Although Galileo had beaten some of their eventual competitors in earlier heats, their close 3rd place finishes were a bittersweet reminder of the small margins that divide success in dragon boat racing. Still, the team left with pride—and with valuable lessons. “Today wasn’t so much about winning,” said the team’s coach, Coach David. “It was about learning the value of trust, timing, and togetherness. And this team demonstrated all of that.”

Off the race course, Galileo’s Celestial Dragons were recognizable for their team spirit. Paddlers braided each other’s hair, handed out custom-designed bracelets to paddlers, and kept up high morale. Camaraderie and the sense of community were present on and off the water.

While the Celestial Dragons have never claimed first at the Youth Race, this year’s performance has sparked new optimism. “We’re closer than we’ve ever been,” junior Sienna L. reflected. “And next year, we’re coming back stronger.”

As the season officially kicks off, Galileo leaves Lake Merced hopeful and determined. With new and exciting races in Long Beach and Foster City coming up in the summer and fall, there are still many things to look forward to.
