G-house will be run by a new person next year, which will be the digital communications students. There will be a new teacher overseeing the class and G house,” said Mr. Machtay. He also really wants G-house to happen once a week again for the students instead of how it was only able to be published every other week this year.
“For 20 years, I’ve had no issues with G- House. I only taught 4 classes a day so we could do the broadcast weekly. This year however, I’ve had to take on another class, so G-House has only been able to create a broadcast every 2 weeks,“ explained Mr. Machtay. He continues, “I also wish we had more promotion for our broadcast. This year since it’s only twice a month, people don’t expect it, and tend to forget it, which leads to people being less informed about what’s going on at the school and opportunities that students have access to.”
Although Mr Machtay will be retiring he still has plans to be around. He plans on substituting for the district occasionally, but can’t start until January 2026. He says there is a period after retirement that you need to wait to get money from the district. He also has plans to just relax and enjoy his retirement life.
“I have been teaching at Galileo since 2001, 24 years ago. We started G-House in January 2003. It’s been my favorite part of the job, and the plan is to keep the G- House legacy going next year.”
Students have nothing but good things to say about Mr. Machtay. An anonymous student said, “Mr. Machtay was a really good teacher. He always made sure we stayed on top of our work and pushed us to keep improving. As a teacher, he really motivates me to do better not just in class, but in general. He made a real difference in how I approach things.”
Although Mr. Machtay will be retiring there are plans Mr Flores gave his thoughts on what the plans for G-house should be when Machtay retires. He wants a video produced each week that gives the announcements, keeps students updated with events about career and college fairs, opportunities. He would like for the digital communications pathway to keep growing, and be more inclusive with a variety of backgrounds. He would love for digital communications to have a film festival every year, produced by them.
