Family First: Mr. O’s Reason to leave Gal

Students and staff were hit with the unexpected news that physics teacher Mr. O, one of the school’s most popular and well respected teachers at Galileo, is taking a leave of absence from teaching for the next couple of years. His reason? He’s starting a family and wants to take time off to focus on this exciting new chapter in his life.

Mr. O, who has won the teacher of the year award the last 2 years, is known for making class fun and for his care of students. “He’s one of those teachers who makes school enjoyable. He explains things so well and always takes the time to help,” said senior Omar B., who had Mr. O for 2 years. “It sucks that he’s leaving, but I’m happy for him.

Mr. O shared that this decision wasn’t an easy one.“I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s important in life, and for me, that’s starting a family. I’m excited for what comes next and need some time to fully focus on that. I’m so thankful for all the love and support from my students and colleagues. I really hope to be back in the future.”

“It’s saddening of course because he’s an incredible asset to our community. He’s an incredible asset to the classroom, he’s an incredible asset as a colleague. He’s a really really close friend. He’s an awesome person. He’s an awesome human being,” said history teacher and Mr. O’s co-softball coach, Mr. Delgado.

Mr. O is also a proud Galileo alum, which made his connection to the school even stronger. His passion for teaching and supporting students showed every single day.“He was one of the realest teachers I’ve ever had,” said senior Mohamed E. “He actually listened to us and made science make sense. We’re definitely gonna miss him.”

Although it’s hard to say goodbye for now, the Galileo community is wishing Mr. O well on the next stage of his journey. Mr, Delgado said, “I’m excited because I think he’s making moves for the right reasons and I’m always cheering for him as a friend and as a colleague”
