Top 3 Acts in the Talent Show

A multitude of performances showcasing students’ skills & gifts highlighted Galileo’s 24th annual talent show on March 21st. Performances ranged from martial arts demonstrations, Frank Sinatra song covers, and more! Hosted every year by Ms. Alarcon, the show is a meaningful spotlight for students to show off their creative passions and talents. The Galileo Press put together a personal ranking of top performances, based on creativity/uniqueness, audience engagement and stage presence.

1st: South Asian Dance

Creativity/Unique Factor: The South Asian traditional clothing is culturally unique, and so were the precise hand movements and intricate footwork. The trio’s performance did a great job at introducing and familiarizing Galileo students to a significant part of South Asian culture, their diverse dance forms which are also a form of storytelling in the region.

Stage Presence: I loved the change in facial expressions as the music changed and there was even a beat drop that engaged the audience! They switched between graceful hand gestures to high-energy beat drops which was very cool to watch!Entertainment/Engagement: The diversity of the design and colors of the clothing were captivating to the eye, especially with the different patterns and adornments. The dance movements were also very rhythmic, graceful, and fluid at the same time!

2nd: Navi J. singing Daniel Caesar

Creativity/Unique Factor: I loved the inclusion of the guitar because it added a lot more musicality. I think he had a very clear tone while he was singing, and a voice that matched the overall mood of Daniel Caesar’s songs really well.

Stage Presence: The soulful melody and lyrics were really nice to listen to, and the lyrics are relatable because it mentions themes about love. I also appreciated that they brought the host Ms. Alarcon up onto the stage while performing, and danced along to the music together. I thought that was very sweet. I also noticed a friend who was crying during the middle of the performance.

Entertainment/engagement: The transition between the song “Loose” and “Best part” was really smooth, and I enjoyed that the performance brought in another singer to duet with Navi in the second half of the performance (during Assembly B), I thought their voices sounded really nice together.

3rd: Fairy Cider Band performing “Talk” by Beabadoobee

Creativity/Unique Factor: There aren’t many student-led mixed-genre bands that have performed at Galileo’s assemblies, so this was really cool to experience, and I felt that they all matched each other’s vibe nicely.

Stage Presence: I thought the lead singer was extremely expressive and passionate about singing, and her vocals were powerful and strong, in tune with the energetic guitar-driven song. I felt that the performance embodied the alternative/indie pop music genre very well, particularly with the guitars.

Entertainment/engagement:  I enjoyed that when the lead singer wasn’t singing, the rest of the band playing the guitars and drums were able to shine. The upbeat tune and rhythm raised the energy levels in the auditorium, and this was a great opening performance to start off the talent show.
