Movie Night Moves Outdoors

Boasting over 100 students in attendance, Galileo’s first outdoor movie night was deemed a success by the junior class cabinet, who hosted the event on the football field on Friday, May 2nd, from 7:30-9 P.M. The event featured a screening of the movie, White Chicks. Students could be seen sitting on blankets, snuggled up with friends, & snacking on food as they enjoyed the movie.

Tickets were sold for $3 at the field gate, and came with free popcorn. Concessions were also sold during the movie, which included chips and Capri-Suns, costing only $1. For the first time, outside guests were also allowed to attend. Over 20 outside students from different high schools came. Despite the unpredictable weather, the event raised over $500.

The movie was initially planned to be projected on an inflatable movie screen, but high winds made it difficult to display the movie on the inflatable. Students setting up for movie night had to go back and forth from the weight room, trying to keep the screen from blowing away, but a hole was also discovered in the inflatable. Mr. O suggested keeping the pump running, but ultimately, it was decided to tape a white sheet to the wall instead.

Despite the problem with the screen, many students enjoyed the movie night experience. Senior Aser S. says, “The audio was really good and the screen was pretty good even though it was set up really funky.” Senior Zhiyou P. also says, “It [movie night] was on the field instead of the auditorium and I could feel the cool Bay Area breeze.”

Senior Kenny T., really enjoyed movie night, saying, ”I like how a lot of the people showed up and the movie was very funny. Whoever chose this movie has humor. When the sun set, it felt more like an outdoor movie night.”

While most students enjoyed the event, there were also a few other issues that students brought up. Freshman Sharon H. said, “Movie night was great, but if you had to use the restroom, we had to walk all the way to Ghirardelli Square, which makes you miss around 10-15 minutes of the movie. Senior Mia F. mentioned that students were too loud, and everyone around her was continuously talking. “I was trying to focus on the movie, but the noise was just so distracting.”

“I’ve talked to ASB, where in the future, they want to just have movie night open for all students and have it free, and we serve popcorn, and students can bring their own food. I probably think we should do it in the fall, since the sun sets at 8 o’clock right now, so it starts a little bit later than we wanted, but overall, I thought it went pretty well,” says Mr. O.

Junior President Vicky L. shared, “Our class cabinet would like to give a huge special thanks and appreciation to Mr. O, Mr. Delgado, Mr. Mendoza, and Jamon from Futurama for helping us pull it off.”
