With a historically long 7 month season, dating back to the beginning of the school year, the Galileo Cheerleaders took home 2nd place in both the Cheer with Stunt category and the Cheer category at the annual CIF Spirit Squad Competition held at George Washington High School on March 8th, 2025. The competition, which is usually held in December, was pushed back until March due to severe weather conditions including a tornado warning which damaged a section of Washington’s roof.

The Lions squad faced off against fierce competition from other SFUSD high schools which included the 2023 – 2024 “Cheer with Stunt” category winners, the Washington Eagles as well as the winners of the “Cheer” category, the Lowell Cardinals. Other cheer squads that competed included San Francisco International Huskies along with returning contenders like the Mission Bears and the Lincoln Mustangs.

The Galileo Cheerleaders performed a multitude of different stunts, such as a connecting piece called “Paper Dolls”, along with other stunts “Teddy Bear”, “Ruby Slipper”,”Heel Stretch” “Extension”, “Ball Up”. Jumps like “Double Toe Touch”, “Herkie”, and “Pike” were performed in a pyramid formation as well as a multitude of tumbling and gymnastics moves. The whole team also performed in the “Cheer with Stunt” category and the “Cheer” category was specifically performed by the 6 graduating seniors.

The team was happy with their overall performance. Senior Kaitlyn L., said, “I was a little worried because I was scared I would mess up the tumbling but after that I felt pretty good and the routine went smoothly. The senior dance was so fun and we did so well and I’m just proud of everyone.”
Sophomore Kylie W. added, “The competition was really delayed so I was tired before it even started. After it was over with, I was relieved we at least placed and got medals. Because it’s my second year on the team, I was a bit less nervous.”
Having battled severe weather conditions disrupting the original date of competition, abrupt spring tryouts, and the switching and combining of stunt groups, the season is finally wrapped up for the Galileo cheer squad and they can focus on tackling other school events, such as Song and Yell and the Move Up Assembly.
