For 6 months, distance learning has been a routine for Galileo students. During this time, a majority of students have become frustrated with distance learning, counting down the days until school goes back to in person learning. These students feel like they need to get out of the house & reconnect with their fellow classmates. However, a group of students who see en online very differently. These students believe that the benefits they get from being at home during school outweigh going back to school in person.
One of the biggest reasons students want to remain in school through distance learning is to take advantage of all the extra sleep they receive, since many don’t have to focus on getting up early anymore to catch the bus. “I get to sleep more and I actually don’t have to ride the muni for 2 hours. In terms of time sake, I save about 2 to 4 hours a day,” says senior Timothy Gee.
Other students see distance learning as a way to multitask. Some students get hungry mid-class due to not eating breakfast in the morning. While in school, some teachers don’t allow eating, students now can take that time in class to have a bite or two while learning. “Sometimes I don’t eat lunch [during the lunch period], so I ate lunch during class instead. It makes me feel like I’m using the time wisely by learning and eating at the same time,” senior Billy Li says.
Some students don’t enjoy the cold small desks they’d have to endure for an hour and a half at Galileo, however, now many enjoy more comfortable seats without having to worry about straining themselves on the hard desks. “I like my comfortable chair when doing work. I get to be by myself working in comfort rather than working in a hard desk in pain,” states senior Wyman Chen.
A final benefit students see is the shorter class times, which mean more time to work on homework. Students think with the limited time in class, it helps push their daily schedule up a bit so there’s more time for hobbies or to get chores done earlier. “I like the shorter days since I can actually complete assignments on time which gives me more time to do chores, it does help,” states Senior Tareq Aboud, while senior Baron Huang adds, “After class, I have lots of spare time. So I hang out with my friends and go to my backyards to look at the birds.”
