Being at Galileo for the past four years has allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone, in particular, joining the swim team my sophomore year. has changed me as a person on how I act and the people I talk to. If it wasn’t for Kenny Tang I would have never joined the team.
I wouldn’t have joined any other club at Galileo and I’m glad I gave the swim team a chance because I made lots of friends and memories in such a short period of time. These memories will stay with me forever.
Swimming in my sophomore year was a struggle, it was my first time swimming competitively and we had a coach who didn’t really teach the newcomers. Through those struggles I had supportive teammates who coached me through the whole season. Even though I enjoyed the season, if it wasn’t for the people I think I would’ve quit after that year.
Going into my junior year we had a new coach and she was a lot more committed. Because of her I started swimming a lot more and showed up to every practice. We practiced from 4:00pm to 5:30pm from Tuesday to Thursday. We would have swim meets on Friday against other schools. Once the first meet came around the corner she had us run drills on what gets us disqualified and what could be considered cheating. Also in my junior year of swimming I improved a lot and met lots of people every friday during the meet. We would go to a meet week against a new school and during those times we would mess around in the locker room while changing.
Finally senior year came around and this is the last year of the swimming season that has come to an end. One thing I learned from joining the swim team is that it is super friendly and it allows people to be who they are around others who don’t care.
After the countless hours I spent swimming and training I was able to achieve placing in all the individual events I trained for. A main thing the swim season taught me was how important dedication is and how far you can go as long as you put your mind to it.
