When School Didn’t Feel Like School

By Jonathan Lau, staff writer

My favorite collection of memories are the times I spent with my friends during lunch. Since I never really enjoyed going to school, I always anticipated hearing the sound of the bell ring to let us out for lunch; it felt like that was all I could think about in class.

I ate lunch with my group of friends in the first floor hallway on Van Ness side; I remember it being near rooms 211 and 214. My group of 5 friends all came from Francisco Middle School and we started sitting there during our freshmen year because it was quiet and not really populated.

As the years passed we continued to eat lunch at the same spot even though I remember more students sitting around us, and the chatter of students talking getting louder and louder.  The best parts of having lunch with my friends were definitely when we would joke and make fun of each other, it would often feel like I wasn’t even at school because of how much of a good time I was having.

The conversations I remember most were the ones where we talked about assignments and tests since a lot of us had the same teachers. It would sound something like, “hey, do you remember any of the questions for the Pre-calc test?” and “Is there any homework today for English class?”

While I can’t point to one specific moment that stood out during all of these lunches, the time I spent with my friends was still really important and memorable because It was one of the few things that I actually looked forward to at school. The chances of us going back to school in person are pretty slim, so when I think about the time I spent at Galileo, lunch in the 1st-floor hallway will always be what I remember.
