Inspired by her culture, Junior Amy B., started the Japanese club in mid-October as part of the recent trend of cultural clubs in Galileo. The club was created to teach people about Japanese culture and also learn more about her culture and heritage as well. She also hopes to create a space where people with similar interests can meet and most of all have fun.
During club meetings, members learn simple Japanese phrases taught by Amy, learn about the culture and Japanese customs, play games, and fold origami, Some things the club plans to do in the future is make and try Japanese food, celebrate Japanese holidays and more things that she has yet to announce. The Japanese club meets every Friday in Rm.317
”Learning Japanese culture is important to me because it’s a big part of my identity and connects me to my family, and I like sharing it with other people,” Says Amy.
In addition to just learning about Japanese culture, the Club is also about making new friends with people and creating a space where people with similar interests could connect with one another.
Amy had the idea of starting the club for about a month or two but really started to plan when she talked it out with history teacher Mr. Lin (the sponsor) and junior Nicholas, the club treasurer. Currently, the club has about 15 members but is open to more people joining.
As of right now, the Japanese club doesn’t plan to participate in any assemblies, such as the multicultural assembly, since the club is really new, and Amy just wants to focus on having regular meetings with its group members.
“I like the Japanese club because it soothes me when u get to make origami.” Said Junior Sean M when he was asked why he joined the club.
