For the average high school student, summer is a time to relax. For rising senior Ryan Marsh, their summer is filled with exciting adventures, with the first of which is trying out for the National USA Field Hockey Team in the Summer.
The Nexus Nationals of 2025 is one of Ryan’s most sought-after events, and having made the U18 team 2 years prior, Ryan hopes to make it again this year as well. Although it is not guaranteed that they will make the cut, their performance at regionals has given a great indication that they will clinch a spot.

“If I do get that call from the US Selection Camp, I want to be ready,” says Ryan, adding, “I’ve been working overtime just in case.” That level of commitment is typical of Ryan, who’s a stickler for discipline and hard work as the goalkeeper for the San Francisco Youth Field Hockey Club.
But Ryan’s summer job doesn’t end with being a field hockey player— they’re also giving back as a coach for their club’s summer camp. Coaching younger athletes is a responsibility and a joy. “Yes, it’s work,” remarks Ryan, “but fun work. I love showing kids how to get better and seeing them get psyched up on the game.”.
Apart from playing field hockey, Ryan will also visit colleges, where they are preparing to apply later this fall. They’ve already begun compiling a list of schools that match both their academic goals and their desire to play on an elite level. “The summer is when a lot of decisions really start formulating,” they say, adding, “I want to play field hockey in college and I’m trying to scout colleges to determine the best fit.”
Of all the activities Ryan is participating in this summer, their highlight on their calendar is staffing at the Civil Air Patrol California Wing’s summer encampment. The program is known for its rigorous training and leadership development, something Ryan has been deeply involved in throughout high school. “Encampment is always a fun challenge,” they say. “It’s intense, but it builds confidence and teamwork—and I’m looking forward to it.”
With all of that on their plate, Ryan still considers their summer about more than being busy—it’s a time to learn, to give back, and move a step closer toward their aspirations. “I want it to be memorable,” they respond. “I want to have a good time, but I also want to come out of it having done something.”
