For the third time in 3 years, a new bell schedule is being implemented. The reason why this new schedule is being implemented is because of more course requirements, like ethnic studies, the dissatisfaction with the 30-minute periods, and the option for 7 periods. With so many options on the table, the Galileo press decided to ask “What are the top 3 things you want from a new bell schedule and why?”
“I want Longer passing periods, possibly shorter classes by 10 minutes and being able to use the bathroom for the first and last 10 minutes. I want longer passing periods because sometimes it just takes me a bit more time to get to class and i want to get to use the bathroom in the first and last 10 minutes because that adds up to 20 minutes you can’t use the bathroom. For the shorter classes i want them because people just dont pay attention in regular classes sometimes and usually their very boring.”-Thomas Lee Freshman
“I want shorter periods because its really hard to have multiple long periods in a day and without a break it gets pretty boring. I also want longer lunches so i can finish my lunch without rushing and early release times because i want to go home earlier.”-Lillian R. Freshman
“Having more classes so i can get my credits in faster, an advisory period so i can work on things that i need to catch up with and having longer lunches so i can actually eat my lunch and do other things so i dont have to rush.”-Compassion C Sophomore
“Longer lunches because lunch is only 40 minutes and that’s pretty short and shorter classes because sometimes classes can be a bore. Also more early dismissals so students can get home quick and do Hw faster.”-Jacky S Sophomore
I want more early release days, shorter classes and sticking with the 6 periods. I want to have early release days so we have more time to do HW and after school activities, shorter classes will help with short attention spans and six period classes so we don’t have to take anymore classes.-Kaitlyn L Junior
“I want an advisory period, 7 periods and early releases because if we have advisory back we can actually see Ghouse TV and i think its nice to see something taht we dont really see anymore. For 7 periods i think it gives us more opportunities for classes and trying to get more credits and i want early release so i can go home earlier.”-Arhjay K Junior
“More Earlier releases and better timed classes because I think it’s still that we have 30 minute classes because 30 minute classes aren’t really productive and I want earlier releases because I just want times where we can go home earlier. My third thing i would like is longer lunches just cause i don’t feel like 40 minutes is enough.”Evelyn Y Senior
“More time for like Stem classes so they can have more time to do labs, not having all your classes all in the same day so your not overloaded with homework and teachers arent forced to make up things for the short period and making the bell schedule make more sense for classes in general so your not overloaded with work.”-Niko P Senior
“What i would like is more time built in to the schedule to support students whether that be additional preparation time for responding to student work, planning curriculum, or answering parent or student emails and maybe that is after school in common planning time or maybe its in the school day. I would also like there to be moe coherence in terms of what bell schedule there is day to day, for example the difference between mondays and wednesdays and thursdays schedule is still confusing to me, i dont know when class ends or begin.Lastly i would like students to have more opportunities to pursue their interests so i would like the schedule to allow for that.”-Ms. Gates English
“I really would like to have enough time for my students to think about an activity before we get started, complete the activity without rushing and clean up the activity before my next class and i cannot do that with a 45-50 minute class, i need a block period to do that.I’m looking forward to having block periods that are mindfully created so we have block periods that meet on Wednesdays and Thursdays, maybe all odds on one day and all evens on another or all morning classes on one day and all afternoon classes on another and that way those block periods can sort of align with other things on our schedule.I’m hoping for the third thing that we have a n advisory period taht will allow students to make up assignments to find out what’s missing, find out what needs to be done and catch up with teachers and connect with teachers and i think we should have this periods 1 hour a week.” -Mr Cadette Science
