Badminton gets off to shaky start

The Galileo Badminton team was unfortunately dominated by the Lowell Cardinals in the first regular season match on Thursday, March 7th, which sets the Lions record to 0-1 to start their season. Many of the players blamed their poor performance on being nervous for the first match of the season, with the added pressure of playing the regular season champions from last year, Lowell.

A number of the players felt very defeated to lose the first game of the season in this fashion. Junior Derek Z. felt like team morale was pretty low after losing to Lowell by such a huge margin. He said, “I felt very crushed losing to Lowell by that huge of a margin. It kills my confidence and the teams as well.”

Galileo was behind the whole match as the Boy’s single junior Alex Y. started with a 2-0 loss to Lowell’s boy’s single both games ending with 7-21 score lines. Following this match was the boys’ first double, juniors Raymond C. and Rico T. and they also lost 2-0 with scores of 11-21 and 8-21.

The boy’s 2nd doubles team, Sophomores Jacky T. and Matthew V. had better luck as they won 2-1 over Lowell’s boys’ second double, with them losing the first game 17-21 but were able to turn things around in the last 2 games, winning both the last 2 sets by the same score, 21-11.

Unfortunately, the girls couldn’t win a single match as freshman Yvonne Y. lost 2-0 with a score of 5-21 and 12-21 and both Girls First double seniors Erica G. and Evelyn Y. also lost 2-0 finishing with scores of 14-21 and 16-21, while girls 2nd double, sophomores Compassion C. and Cindy O. also lost 2-0 with the scores being 12-21 and 16-21.

Junior Sean M. was disappointed by the loss but, is looking forward to the next match. He said, “I felt overwhelmed after the loss. We lost by a really large amount but I think that we were just getting over our nerves and we’ll do better against Washington.”
