Flag Football: Gal v. Wash Game

By Estefani Dujardin, staff writer

With stellar run plays, and a strong defense Galileo’s Lioness Flag Football team claimed their 3rd win in as many games with a 25-0 victory over the Washington Eagles on Wednesday, May 12th at Washingtons’ field.

While it took the Lioness a while to get their footing in a scoreless first quarter, by the second quarter they were in full control of the game. The Lioness scored at the opening of the second quarter on an interception by Sophomore cornerback, Cali Lipscomb. She described how she felt about the play, saying “I felt happy that I was able to prevent them from getting yards and glad we got to go back to offense.” The Lioness’ scored again later in the quarter on a run play that resulted in a 15-yard touchdown by Junior slot, Rukaya Radman. The Lioness ended the 1st half of the game with a strong lead, 13-0.

In the 3rd quarter, the Lioness’ had a touchdown called back after they tried a new pass play that was made on the spot, that incorporated both Senior quarterbacks Christine Zhu and Susan Li. Though the pass was complete the referee didn’t count the touchdown leaving the team frustrated.

In the 4th quarter, the Lioness offense started playing with a quicker tempo that caught the Eagles off guard in order to gain more yards and ultimately score another touchdown. Another highlight of the 4th quarter was Senior safety, Elizabeth Young, making her first interception of the season.

With the time on the clock running out the Lioness took a knee, bringing the game to an end and giving the Lioness another victory.

Both Cali Lipscomb and Senior cornerback, Christine Zhu, each received a game ball for their 3 interceptions each during the game. Christine said, “I felt a rush of excitement and a little bit of fear (when I got the game ball) because my teammates were depending on me to try to score a touchdown and I didn’t want them to see me fail.”

Overall, the Lioness’ were proud to come home with another victory, especially one where it was a complete team effort. Rukaya said, “I feel very good about the way the team played! I am so proud of us all and being able to bring out the best in each other and having so many moments throughout this game because of the amazing plays each one of us had was so great. We have looked forward to playing Wash since last year and I’m glad we got the chance and pulled through at our best.”
