The haunted house at Galileo, which hoped to become an annual tradition, was unfortunately canceled this year due to having a limited amount of time and some of the assigned responsibilities to the staff weren’t able to be fulfilled.
According to the lead sponsor, social studies teacher Mr.Delgado, the staff for the haunted house, including himself, were spread really thin with staff having other responsibilities outside of the haunted house club.
Some of the issues that the committee faced was that only 40% of costumes were completed, and there was a time issue as last year the committee had all day to set up, since the haunted house was on a Saturday, compared to this year they would only have an hour and a half hour to set up.
Mr. Delgado stated, ”Planning could’ve been significantly better, distribution responsibilities could’ve been better and it took a whole lot of advice from my peers, other teachers and colleagues to eventually come to the conclusion that it would probably be best to postpone it to next year only because the quality wouldn’t have been where it should be.” He also added, “I feel like I’m letting people down who invested a lot of time into it, [but] I Don’t want them to feel like they wasted their time.”
Mr. Delgado does believe though that there were some positives despite the cancellation. He said, “There was community being built, people were able to meet new & other people, & people were able to be creative.”
Others who were involved in the project also felt bad that the haunted house was canceled. Futurama staff, Jamon T., who was helping with the project, said, “I feel bad to have let some people down because you guys [the students] were expecting something to go one way but it ended up going another, but it’s definitely a learning opportunity.”
Students who worked on the project were also disappointed in the cancellation, but also chose to look at the positives. President and founder of the club, sophomore Navi J., said, “I do feel upset about it [the cancellation], but it’s all about the connection that my club has with each other. We need more communication and get things done. We will for sure be having one next year.”
While this year ended in disappointment, Mr. Delgado is already looking forward to next year. He said, “Next year’s Halloween is going to be on a Friday which means we could also associate it with “Hoco” on Saturday. We’re gonna have a lot of fun with it and a lot of planning and have deliveries arrive way ahead of time as far as costumes being completed or sets already being made or outcomes being made ahead of time.”
