With just one week to prepare, Galileo’s ASB Executive Cabinet pulled off the school’s annual Winter Assembly despite facing scheduling conflicts with district guidelines and finals week. Unlike past Winter Assemblies, the cabinet created a more inclusive event by opening up both student and teacher engagement through musical chairs and trivia games.
“This assembly was definitely harder to plan than homecoming,” ASB President Mia F. said. “However, I’m glad we had everything set perfectly in time.”
Over Thanksgiving break, Mia F. and Business Vice President Betsy D. spent hours on the phone finalizing the script and locking in the schedule. Additionally, Activities Chairperson Bindy G. designed posters to brighten up the auditorium stage. The Girls and Boys Athletic Chairpersons, Penelope S. and Chris L. designed interactive games for winter sports teams to participate in, while also creating a recap video slideshow of this school year’s events.
With only one full rehearsal allowed the day before the assembly, ASB went straight to work. “Half the cabinet stayed after school until 6:30 P.M. on Monday finishing up the paintings and designs for the games,” Penelope said, adding, “It was pretty chaotic. Orchestra and The Substitutes were in the auditorium practicing, too.”
With such a rushed production, some students felt that the assembly could have been smoother. Junior Nancy G. said, “The Mean Girls dance was a bit messy,” while junior Quian E. noticed how the projector wasn’t working properly which messed with the video connection.
Another student, Ellerie M., mentioned that the candy canes should’ve been thrown higher.
But given how little time they had to prepare, the ASB thought things turned out well. “In the end, I think the assembly went great,” Betsy D. said. “We figured out that we didn’t have enough time, so we had to cut things out, such as musical chairs and a few songs from The Substitutes. I also saw students in the audience who were excited for the trivia game.”
“ASB will host many more school-wide events in the spring,” Mia F. said. “We can’t wait!”
