Girls Varsity basketball’s Promising Season

By Logan Tracy & Riley Figueroa (Staff Writer

After almost 2 years of not being on the court due to the pandemic, the Galileo girls varsity basketball team believes they are in a good place this season due to strong team chemistry & communication. There seems to be a positive feeling around the team with many 4 year returning players as the main reason for the team’s chemistry and lots of talent to help the team succeed.

The Lions finished with a record of 3 and 1, clinching a spot last Friday with a win vs Wallenberg (43-34). Galileo will now travel to Lowell to face them in the play-offs on February 17 at 4:30pm.

The focus of the team is one of the main reasons for their success this season, believes head coach, Matt Allen. He says, “The girls come in to practice everyday wanting to improve and get better. This growth mindset this team shows are good signs of a successful season on the way.”

A number of players on the team share the same opinions as Coach Allen. Junior Alexandra V, is happy to be back playing and improving and also highlighted the team’s chemistry and communication as one of their strongest traits. What makes their chemistry so strong is the fact that they have played with each other years prior and have had to overcome a lot together.

The team, however, does recognize they have weaknesses to overcome this season. First, they are struggling with players dropping out of their team as they had to play one game with only 5 players. They also have had a constant issue having to reschedule games due to COVID outbreaks. According to Coach Allen, the season has had no consistency and it’s been hard to find a consistent flow because of these obstacles.

Despite these hurdles Coach Allen still appreciates the way the girls have battled through. Coach Allen said, “There’s lots of things that they need to work on but they’ve been coming with the right mindset and right attitude and is improving everyday, they come in ready to improve but a coach doesn’t really get any serious issues”

The players seem driven, looking to continue the success they’ve found on the court this season so far. Alejandra says, “[Our goal is] to play stronger as a team and of course get wins in order to have a successful season.”
