Comeback from Injury: Work Harder

By Brandon Su, staff writer

Striving for excellence never escapes senior football player Wilson Lu, whose relentless mentality to strive to be his best self may be the factor that will help him be remembered as one of the best players from the class of 2023.

Wilson is what some might call a “jack of all trades”, playing positions on both offense and defense, including; running back, slot receiver, linebacker and slot corner. Playing all these positions are part of the versatility he brings to the team.

Head coach Nick N., is glowing in his praise of Wilson. Coach Nick said, “Wilson has always been determined to improve. From the first day I met him, he was “about the work”. He always took a leadership position … If he takes those qualities with him in life … He will no doubt find success.”

Wilson began his stint in sports by participating in his middle school track and field team. Joining the team allowed him to gain a passion for sports and the mentality to strive to be the best he can be. His passion and career in football started freshman year, when he was told by (former football) coach Espy to join the team in order for him to become a better sprinter when track season came around.

Playing football at Galileo did not come without obstacles though. During his junior year, he was injured during a preseason game, costing him a whole season of play. “I was honestly really lost at first, but eventually put my pride aside and realized that injuries are something that I can’t control and decided to just focus on things that I can [control],” Wilson said.

Although his injuries are behind him now, Wilson isn’t complacent with his current performance, always looking for ways to improve in his craft. He often spends hours studying the sport, watching football film as well as studying how the professional players do their job.

As a hobby, he also enjoys going to the gym and lifting weights. “[One of my biggest achievements is] benching 225 at 135 pounds,” he stated. Staying with the team and overcoming all the adversity he faced for 4 years was also something that he felt was a great accomplishment.

When asked about future plans, Wilson says that if he ever gets the opportunity to be a walk-on at a D1 college football program, he will definitely seize the opportunity to do so. If the opportunity doesn’t present itself he hopes to study criminology and pursue a career as a police detective.
