Girl’s tennis narrowly misses finals

The girl’s tennis team gives a cheer before their match

The Girls tennis team fell just short of advancing to the championship, losing to Washington HS (6-1) in the playoffs on Wednesday November 2nd at Golden Gate Park.

“It was the closest we’ve been to advancing into the championship. We have not been in the championship tennis match in many years, maybe like 20 years. That was probably the closest we’ve been because we almost had 3 points,” said Coach Roth.

While the final score (6-1) might indicate that Galileo lost by a lot, it was actually a very close match up. One singles match played by Keira T. went to tie breaker and the doubles match  played by Esther L. and Abigail W. was really close to getting the Lions at 3 points, which would’ve made the score 4-3, but because of that one round loss the final score ended up being more lopsided in favor of Washington.

While a few scores could have broken differently to possibly change the outcome for the Lions, the team has no regrets. Coach Roth said, “There’s nothing I would change about that match. Honestly I thought it went very well, we could have always played better but just very happy with how hard the girls worked this season and how much growth they had.”

When asked how the playoffs went, Victoria V. replied, “Playoffs were great! I felt very prepared and our coach did a really good job. I felt sad that this would be the last official match as a part of the team but as always it was great playing alongside my teammates.”

Reflecting back on the season as a whole, Coach Roth could not have been happier. He said, “This season was an incredibly fun season. The girls were very supportive of each other, probably the most supportive and the most social team we had in the past 5 years. It was really nice to see them out there cheering each other no matter if they’re winning or losing.”
