Small Bay Gym shut down

by Brian Diaz, Staff Writer

All activities in the small Bay St. gym  have been suspended after cracks in the ceiling of the gym had been found both inside & outside of the building. The administration is worried that the cracks could eventually lead to pieces of the ceiling falling down and putting students in danger.

The cracks in the ceiling were first noticed by P.E. department head, Mr. Braund who alerted Galileo principal, Mr. Avila. Mr. Avila then called the SFUSD architect to come out and take a look at the cracks. The architect believes that water has drained in the ceiling and that rain leaked inside, making the concrete possibly able to fall on the inside of the basketball court, and thus suggested closing the gym until he could get a closer look at the cracks.

The gym will not to have scaffolding put up so the structural engineers can further inspect the damage, but that may not be approved until January.

Both PE & sports have been hurt by the closure of the gym. PE teachers Mr. Adams said, “It’s affecting us in the negative way; some of our classes are too big to be in small rooms, and it is raining and cold outside”. Even though the boys volleyball team don’t have tryouts until January, the gym closure affects the team’s ability to prepare for their season. Head coach Mark Huynh said, “Having the gym allow us to do some running and jumping to get ready for the season, and we can’t use it, and it does affect how we can work and get ready for the season”.
