After 2 straight losses after winning their first game of the regular season, the Galileo boys frosh/soph basketball team was able to redeem themselves and pick up a win and even their record (2-2) in their 2nd home game of the season against Wallenburg last Friday, January 13, as the Lions dominated the game, from start to finish, winning, 61-21.
The Lions started out the game strong in almost every facet of the game; that included good shot making, strong rebounding and solid defense. With every part of the game working for the Lions, they jumped out to a big lead after the first quarter, 17-3. The team believed the formula for jumping out to their big lead was simple. “We moved the ball around, made good passes and made a lot of our shots,” said freshman center Andrew S.
Transitioning to the second quarter, the Lions continued their domination of the Bulldogs, gaining confidence through their strong play. The Lions were also aided by the support and screams from a large crowd of families and friends watching from the bleachers, as the Lions cruised to a 39-11 lead.
With a comfortable lead in the 2nd half, the Lions were able to substitute more freely and give some of the players who aren’t normally in the rotation, a chance to play in front of the home crowd. Having their roles reversed during the 4th quarter, the starters really focused on cheering from the bench for these players getting extended minutes. Freshman point guard Henry Z. says, “We cheered them on because they don’t get that many minutes and we wanted them to score.”
Head coach, Kyle Liu was honest in his assessment of the team’s win. He said, “They [the team] did pretty well. It’s a tough competition with a team a little below our level. The focus however was on point which I appreciate. Hopefully that win will give us a positive momentum at the game against Washington on Wednesday as well as confidence.”
The Lions will next head to Washington to take on the Eagles F/S team onWednesday January 18th. The Lions know that the Eagles will be a much tougher team as they are one of the stronger teams in the league. Freshman shooting guard Chris L. summed up the team’s focus, saying, “The goal is to make it to the playoffs and beat Wash.”
