Just formed after winter break, the “Provide Club” aims to raise money to donate to communities in need, while also volunteering to organizations that feed the homeless population.
Created by junior Hiyab T., the “Provide Club” already has 22 members, who meet every Wednesday during lunch in room 414 to plan the next activities the group wants to do over the next 2-3 weeks. Currently, one idea the club has planned is selling food and drinks in parks to raise money.
Hiyab said, “The thing that inspired me to start the club is the willingness to provide and help our community. I understood that starting a club that worked on providing for the benefit of the community would give students, including me, the opportunity to participate in different activities to help make a positive contribution to the ones in need and the overall community.”
The club is already off to a good start with fundraising as they sold crepes at the Food fest in February and made $153. The club plans to continue fundraising and are planning to eventually donate half of the money they raise to help victims who have been affected by the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.
The club also plans to volunteer each Saturday to help feed those who are homeless, through sign ups with the non-profit organization, “City Team”. Beyond that, the club is also looking to raise money through other fundraisers, including; more food fests, a GofundMe account, selling food and drinks in parks and any other fundraising platform to receive donations.
Members have been inspired by different reasons to join the “Provide Club”. Some enjoy the group of students who make up the club, as junior Adam G. said, “The idea sounded really awesome and the community is really good that’s why I joined,” while others are motivated by the ideas behind the club. Junior Dawit B. said, “We see how bad homelessness is in San Francisco and I wanted to help my community that’s why I joined the club”
