After six years of not being offered as a class, starting next year, a drama class will be available to any students interested in learning the art of drama. The goal of the class is to bring an opportunity for students to combine their interest for drama and produce more amazing plays for the Galileo community to support.
The recent play, performed by the drama club, entitled, “The Iliad, The Odyssey and all of Greek Mythology” helped spur the administration to push for a drama class to begin again.
Freshman Mat K. says, “We put on a really big and fun show. It showed people what acting is and if there is a mistake, you can always make it work. That is what I learned from this experience.”
The large number of students who were participating both on stage and backstage caught principal Avila’s attention. In addition, a number of teachers had already mentioned bringing back a drama class, so Mr. Avila decided to jump on the idea and bring it back for next year.
There are however a lot of things that are still unknown about the class. VAPA department head, Ms. Partridge, who is helping figure out some of the logistics of the class, said, “The new drama class will fall into the visual arts requirement, so we hope to see a good amount of students. We are unsure who will teach it, but there is a line of teachers both in and out of Galileo.”
Ms Partridge also predicts the upcoming class will have more student driven ideas because of how much student voices have evolved over the years. She says, “Here at Galileo we display and produce art and I’m excited to see what the drama class will bring to Galileo. We hope to see one play a semester bringing a deeper connection to the Galileo community.”
