After a student pointed out several problems with a lack of connection between student leadership, and sports, ASB members came up with a new boys and girls athletic chairperson position that will be instituted beginning next school year.
ASB advisor, Mr. Seligson says, “I’m hoping for people that are focused, understand how to take initiative, have a vision, and know how to communicate properly; someone who’s not afraid to take risks and think big outside the box. And someone that has connections to the sports teams is going to be vital.”
Students from all different grades are encouraged to run for athletic chairperson and will be selected through an interview process.
Those who were interested had to fill out the Declaration of Candidacy form, as well as turn in a physical signature to the ASB store, and start campaigning. Forms were due on April 7th. Those who were selected had Interviews and appointments between April 8th and April 27th.
Those who are elected to take positions as an athletic chairperson are going to be responsible for communicating upcoming sports events to Galileo students and the community. This will include working with social committee members to help out with Pep rallies, creating better atmosphere at the home games, updating monthly sports calendars, and bringing up weekly reports to ASB president. Lastly, Those who are elected will also be responsible for helping recruit and educate new students on sports.
“I was one of the officers who pushed for it just because in the past I’ve heard a lot of feedback saying that there should be more connections and support between ASB and sports, and this position is one of our efforts to make that happen. I think a lot of athletes will appreciate this position because it’s mostly to help promote their games and get students to support them, says Grace O, Executive ASB President.
Although not everyone agrees that the position is necessary. Senior class president, Jacob L., added, “I think that the sports position is a waste of manpower and we can really use another ASB position instead of one that helps coordinate sports with student activities. Rather than just adding more roles I think that there should be a greater focus to coordinate areas with little support such as clubs and refining the current roles we have.”
Others however, believe the position will make the school better in the long run. “I think if it’s done correctly overall, it will be a good thing because the sports get all the recognition from guys football, tennis, girls football soccer, boys and girls basketball. I think it will increase the school spirit in that aspect,” says Katelyn A, ASB vice president.
