Softball Suffers Playoff Defeat

By Laney Figueroa, staff writer

The undefeated Galileo softball team headed into the playoffs, with a record of 5-0, but had their season abruptly ended by Lincoln High School at West Sunset Playground  on Tuesday May 9th. The game lasted 5 innings with the final score of 12-2.

The team believed the loss was due to some mistakes in the field and not getting enough hitting. Multiple players on the team agreed that they lacked confidence at the plate and had trouble with communication and coordination on the field.

But despite the negatives from the loss, the team also believed they played better in defeat than they had in many of their other games this season, and that everyone has improved a lot this season.

Junior, Ana Sofia C. (left field) “I’m disappointed we lost in our first round of playoffs, I think the whole team was nervous and we could have done better but I think for all the hard work we put in we definitely deserve to be here in the playoffs.”

Looking back at the playoff game, players highlights from the game included the play when junior team captain, Andronica R. (catcher) threw out a Lincoln player stealing second, as well as sophomore, Mia F. (center field) made an amazing catch in the outfield.

As far as reflecting on the season itself, most players were let down with the amount of games they played. 4 year player and team captain, Tina X. says, “It’s disappointing that a lot of games got canceled and the schedule was messed up.” Junior team captain, Kaia B. added, “My hopes for next year is definitely to play more games and make it past the first round of playoffs.”

Coach Tad agreed with his players but also felt good about how the team grew. He said, “Everyone did well this season during practice but the way the league developed, we were only able to play a couple games. But a lot of returning players learned a lot this year.”

As for some things to focus on for next season, freshman Mia M. (secoond base) said, “It would be nice to have more practice time but overall I think I learned and improved a lot. It helps that we have such a great community, I just wish that we wouldn’t let ourselves get put down by small things and communicate more when we’re out on the field.”
