All hope melts away for the Winter Ball

Due to limited time and funding, the much anticipated winter ball won’t be happening this year which brings the total number of dances expected to be held down to 3, with more potential cancellations if funding issues continue.

Citing the refusal of many venues to host and the tight budget for this dance, ASB Business Vice President Connie H. said the association won’t be able to hold the event. Unlike last year with the Cupid’s Night Club in February, the possibility of the dance’s postponement into the spring semester was eliminated due to worries of unsuccessful ticket sales for Boat Dance and Prom.

Connie explained, “More support from the school community in our fundraising efforts will help fund our future dances.” She also encourages students to promote and interact with fundraisers and activities to help boost school spirit and morale.

Some notable events and campaigns already in motion that the school community can participate in include the GoFundMe campaign for the seniors and the upcoming Hot Chocolate Run in January where all 4 classes will receive a donation for volunteering. Other fundraisers include Food Fest, happening December 15, and various bake sales hosted throughout the year. Details for these events are shared across their social media accounts and through school-wide emailing.

Student participation in these fundraisers will help tremendously, as other dances are at risk of cancellation including Boat Dance and Prom. Boat Dance needs to raise $8,000, while Prom still needs $14,000 to meet their expensive budgets. These significant goals with little time to fundraise threaten to increase the likelihood of more cancellations this year.

Some students are a little frustrated to hear the news about not having a winter ball dance. “I’m pretty disappointed to hear that there won’t be a winter ball this year,” said junior Max M., “it’s kind of nice to have a more formal dance rather than the casual dances like homecoming.” Freshman Lillian H. added, “I’m sad about this since it’s one less dance, especially during my first year here.”
