A move towards monthly movie night

Popcorn, hot chocolate, and other supplies for attendees.

With a desire to host more community events for the school, the ASB, in partnership with Film Club, is initiating a monthly movie night—named “Galileo After Hours”—after school with snacks and drinks to fundraise and encourage community participation.

The first movie night happened on Friday, January 26th starting at 5:50 P.M. and ending late at 8:00 P.M. with a screening of Damien Chazelle’s La La Land in the auditorium. Tickets sold for $5 each—including free hotdogs, popcorn, sodas, and hot chocolate—, but only about 30 students were in attendance according to coordinator and ASB Historian Jayden L. Despite the low participation from students, it was still enough to break even and gain some extra profit.

ASB Boys’ Athletic Chairperson Jackson V. said, “all the food and beverages went smoothly,” adding, “although I didn’t watch the movie, it was great [time] to hang out with friends.”

Because of the readily available resources and administrative approval, the ASB felt this would be a good first event to start off the spring semester.

Initially, there were plans to use the inflatable screen that was originally going to be used for the Welcome Back Assembly in September, but due to some technical difficulties, the movie was moved to the auditorium from the courtyard.

Jayden also mentioned that the ASB plans to put up more public polls for student input on what to show next and to promote the activity to more people going forward.

With little time after announcing the event, many students had different reasons on why they didn’t attend. Junior Keisha A. said, “I felt that it was promoted well. Even though I wasn’t able to go, I’m pretty interested in going to future movie nights.” Freshman Lillian R. added, “I wasn’t really aware of the activity,” when asked about what she knew, adding, “hopefully I hear more about it in the future so I’m able to go.”

However, senior Dexter G. said, “I made the conscious decision not to attend because I wasn’t particularly interested in going,” sharing that there wasn’t much appeal to the activity.

Students who attended the event had positive things to say. When asked about his experience, Film Club member Andrew L. said, “it could have been more organized with a definite spot to host.” But overall he had fun and said he would do it again.
