An amazing discovery was found last week when renovations to the boy’s locker room were being made, a network of military tunnels used to transport weapons led to the barracks in Presidio.
The repairmen working at the school were baffled when they removed the floor and uncovered the tunnels. “Of course it would come as a shock for those working on the school. No one would’ve expected something like this to be under the school,” says Interim Principal Mr. Panjabi, who was present during the construction.
Mr. Panjabi can’t wait to uncover the tunnel’s full story: “I’m excited, but scared at the same time what could be of these tunnels. I think everyone would feel a little bit better if we uncovered the truth,” says Mr. Panjabi.
While there is excitement about the tunnel, Mr. Panjabi expressed concern over the safety of the students as he thinks some students may try to explore these tunnels or cut class in these tunnels, saying, “Although this might be an exciting discovery, I’m worried that students may try to explore and maybe even cut class and hang out in these tunnels. Without much information right now, I think students should try their best to avoid them.”
Students should know that government officials have sent soldiers with guns to guard these tunnels for the time being, until the site is secured. “Students shouldn’t be alarmed if they see armed guards, they’re gonna be here at least until the end of the school year. This may seem scary, but everything will be fine as long as students don’t wander into the tunnels,” says Mr. Panjabi.
With the limited information that is known, people can only speculate what could be in these tunnels. There have been some rumors saying that these passageways were built during World War II as San Francisco was an active war post at the time. “We don’t know exactly when these tunnels were built, but I think they might have been built somewhere around the same time Galileo was built. I suspect that due to the rising tensions of World War II, these structures were meant as a sort of safeguard against the Japanese,” says History Teacher Mr. Cossey.
Some students who have heard about these tunnels have mixed emotions; some expressing curiosity and some expressing uneasiness about what could be in there. “This is quite crazy, I’ve always been interested in US History and this discovery made me really excited. To think that our school is somewhat connected to WWII,” says Junior Benjamin T.
“I’m kinda scared because what if something scary is in there, I think we should explore more so that we actually know that these tunnels being here isn’t dangerous for the students that go here,” says Junior Hawkes P.
