New flex schedule offered to incoming seniors

The option of a new Flex Schedule was announced by counselors to the current juniors for the next school year. This means those who are eligible—able to fulfill the A-G requirements and don’t have to make up extra classes—can take 6 consecutive classes instead of a full 7 class day. Students were given a forum to complete for signing up for the flex schedule, where they also filled out their preference between having classes in the periods 1° to 6° or 2° to 7°, getting out early or getting to school late.

Many students are happy to take advantage of the schedule offer. Incoming Senior Richynie L. says, “I love the flex schedule idea, and yes I signed up for it because I have a lot of credits and I don’t really want to stay [at school] longer than I have to if I exceed the credit requirement.”

“I think less school is better, especially since we haven’t had a seventh period [before], so I don’t think it makes sense to have one at the end,” says Junior Jared I. Alex P., also a Junior, adds, “I think its good especially for the seniors because its kind of unfair that we get a random seventh period when its mainly for the sophomores and the freshmen because of Ethnic Studies.”

“We would like to continue to offer it to seniors,” says Counselor Thomas Chu about the future. “There are talks of maybe expanding it to juniors, but that’s a question for the following school year and not the coming school year.”

Additionally, the counselors are considering making a period designated for sports. Mr. Chu says, “We know that a lot of sports classes do tend to leave early for games or matches and so making a 7th period P.E. class for athletes would be convenient so they are not missing out on their academic classes.”
