Poll: Kindest Thing a Teacher Has Done for You

With over 2,000 students and a dedicated team of teachers, Galileo High School is full of memorable moments. To celebrate this, the Galileo Press asked students, “What’s the nicest thing a Galileo teacher has done for you?” Their responses remind us how our teachers make Galileo a community, rather than just a school.

Andrew L, Senior

Teacher: Mr. Benz

“The kindest thing a Galileo teacher has done for me is talk to me for hours after school every day. I’m a really social person. After school, everyone’s going home, but I need to stay at school. So I really appreciate that he keeps me company and gives me something to talk about while I’m still at school waiting for my mom.”

Isaac Y, Sophomore

Mr. Rodriguez

“The kindest thing a Galileo teacher has done for me is donate to the basketball team. Not many teachers donate.”

Journey D, Senior

Teacher: Mr. Delgato

“The kindest thing a Gal teacher has done for me is buy me food. He bought me Wingstop, he bought me pizza, In-n-Out. I ain’t gonna lie he’s bought me a lot of food. He’s bought me this food because either I won something in class, or I’m because I’m his TA.”

Shawn B, Sophomore

Teacher: Mr. Thayer

“The kindest thing a Galileo teacher has done for me is help me with homework. I was struggling in that class, and he really helped me get my grade up. He helped me for three days.”

Barbara A, Junior

Teacher: Ms. Gates

“When I was feeling sad, Ms. Gates let me have some time off of the classwork and let me be on my own. I was having such a rough day, and that just made it better since I didn’t have to worry much about that class.”

Zachy Z, Senior

Teacher: Mr. Cossey

“The nicest teachers do for me is treating me like a friend and not like a student. Mr. Cossey is one of them. Usually with teachers, you ask them a question or something like that and they just respond professionally. Mr. Cossey, you can ask him anything and he’ll respond. For example, we talked about his prime time, the glory days back in high school, if you used to get girls or not. He would respond to that, you know? I can call him my boy.”

Santiago S, Sophomore

Mr. Gomez

“The kindest thing a teacher has done is say they were impressed with my work that I had done for that class. I really tried on that project that day. It was a bunch of slides we had to do with a bunch of information, and it took a long time.”

Ms. Gates, English teacher

“I can’t think of anything specific, but just in general [my high school teachers] made me feel cared about and recognized and seen as an individual with an intellect and something to offer instead of just a student.”

Mr. Honnef, Statistics teacher

“I feel like I remember being sick at some point in high school and finding a teacher’s home phone number and calling them, just so they could tell me what the homework was, and they were super nice about it and not annoyed at all.”
