Due to harsh weather conditions, which included a tornado warning issued, George Washington High School’s gym roof collapsed and flooded, cancelling the annual CIF Spirit Squad Competition that the Galileo Cheerleaders were set to compete in on Saturday, December 14th.
With such a sudden complication to what was supposed to be an exciting day, the cheer team was shocked & disappointed that the competition was suddenly canceled. “I was in my room halfway through my makeup when I was called by another cheerleader (Senior Megan L.) telling me the competition had been cancelled,” states senior Captain Maya W., adding, “I was first in denial but then was overwhelmed as I realized competition season wasn’t over yet.”
Junior Sharon L. expressed how she felt by saying, “I was frustrated that the competition was cancelled as I was already halfway there to Washington. I had woken up at 7am, gotten dressed, for nothing. Afterwards, I ended up going to Japantown for some sushi.”
On the other side, Junior Jasmine N. spoke on the matter by saying, “It was 9:40am and we were supposed to get there at 10am. I was frantically rushing to get all ready and I was just about to walk out my front door when I read that the competition was cancelled. I felt saddened after reading the message after how hard we’ve worked and I was really distressed.”
Similarly, Senior Kaitlyn L. touched on the matter saying, “I was just finished getting ready when I saw competition was cancelled. I was definitely disappointed that the competition was scheduled because I’m worried about the rescheduling dates, but I was also relieved. The weather that day was extremely gloomy and as a result, made everything else feel the same way so I didn’t feel like going out. However, this also gives us more time to practice and perfect our routine even more.”
Ms. Dunn, head cheer coach and P.E teacher tried to do everything in her power to still hold the competition. She said, “I was drinking my coffee when Maya called me saying the competition was cancelled. I immediately contacted Coach Keough asking if it would be plausible to host the competition at Galileo. However, CIF said it was too short notice and has plans to fully reschedule the event. I was super bummed out that it was cancelled though!”
CIF was immediately informed and their statement read as follows:
“Good morning, I hope you are well and safe. Due to unforeseen facility issues due to the weather today the 24-25 AAA/CIF SF City Section Championships has been postponed to a later date that will be determined. Apologies for the late notice and any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you for your support and understanding.”
As of publication, no date has been announced yet for rescheduling, though dates have been proposed to the respective participating schools.
